Addictions We Treat

Sexual Addiction & Pornography Addiction

Sex Addicts compulsively pursue sexual behaviors despite them causing harm to themselves and/or others. Sex addicts have an inability to limit their sexual behavior and exposure to damaging sex-related consequences. Specific behaviors vary widely from spending hours watching pornography, compulsive masturbation, one-night stands, prostitution, voyeurism, exhibitionism, love & relationship addiction, intrusive sex, phone sex, and many more. Escalation occurs when acting out behaviors go from having a “good time” to simply “feeding the beast” using sex to escape the pain of living life on life’s terms.

Partner’s of Sex Addicts

Oftentimes, partner’s of sexual addicts have had a “sixth sense” for a long time that something was wrong, but may not know what the nature of the true problem is until the house of cards built by the sexual addict comes crashing down. Painful discoveries exist in an array of circumstances for the sex addict: being arrested, being “outed” by an affair partner, the spouse coming across an undeleted browsing history, photos of sexting unintentionally shared across devices — whatever the situation partners are devastated by the betrayal.

Addiction Interaction Disorder or Multiple Addictions

Addiction Interaction Disorder

“Sometimes addictions do more than co-exist. They in fact interact, reinforce, and become part of one another. They, in effect, become packages.” ~Patrick Carnes from “Bargains with Chaos” article

Deprivation/Avoidance Disorders - Sexual Anorexia

Cycles of deprivation and excess are often part of the larger cycle or “dance” of addiction interaction. Anorexics cope with life stresses by avoiding things that are pleasurable: sexual, emotional, social intimacy. Being in control can bring a euphoria and sense of superiority.
